Portmanteaus are two or more words combined to make a new word with fresh meaning. Examples include words like “brunch” (breakfast and lunch) and “Eurasia” (Europe and Asia).
So I thought, why not come up with some book-related portmanteaus for those moments when one word on its own isn’t enough to describe something? It was a lot of fun, actually! I challenge you to add one to the comments (I can’t wait to see yours!), but here are some of the ones that came to mind.
The rare occasion on which you get to sit down and read.
Spine-mingler (Not quite a portmanteau, but a play on spine-tingler)
When someone takes a book off your shelf and puts it in a different spot.
Skinteruption (Skin + interruption)
When someone interrupts your reading and you use a body part as a bookmark.
Transfail (Transfer + fail)
When you try to transfer your book or ereader into your other hand but drop it instead.
Blissorrow (Bliss + Sorrow)
The emotion you feel when finished reading a good book that you didn’t want to end.
Flipassage (Flip + Passage)
A section of a book that is kinda boring so you skim through it.
Innovelative (Innovative + novel)
A book that is truly different from anything you’ve ever read before.
What do you think? Do any of these describe something familiar to you? Can you come up with any more book-related portmanteaus? Leave a comment if you think of one!
