Baltimore GiveCamp | How We Geeks do Charity

GiveCampFrom October 18 – 20, I was lucky enough to participate in the Baltimore GiveCamp. Before you give up because that’s not anywhere close to you, know that GiveCamp is a national event. To find one in your area, check out the main GiveCamp website.

Here’s the skinny: developers, project managers, writers, WordPress designers, social media specialists, graphic designers, and all other sorts of awesome people get together for a weekend of coding. Over the course of the weekend, they create a tech project for a non-profit that couldn’t otherwise afford crucial things like databases and websites.

And the stuff GiveCamp makes is awesome.

You don’t have to be an HTML 5 wizard to help (though that is always in high demand). Anything you can do, from project management to food prep, is going to help the event. And boy do they keep us well fed the whole time!

I volunteered my social media know-how over the weekend to create campaigns for several of the non-profits, but the team on one of them really stole my heart: Compass Academy. These are some amazing folks, and I couldn’t be happier to have met them. The team of coders and non-profit reps really made the weekend what it was for me. In a word: exhilirating.

Yes, I was exhausted. Yes, I drank way too much soda to stay awake. And yes, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

For those of you in the Marlyand area, you’ll see me again at Baltimore GiveCamp 2014. If you haven’t signed up, you should. Hope to see you there! And when you do sign up, leave a comment here so I know you’re going.

Much love!
