As we make our way through the adventure called life, we all go through rough patches where the best thing for us is just a little inspiration. I created the Boyce Manifesto to give you that motivational boost everyone needs now and then. There are my twelve mantras to live by, and today I want to share a story about one of them.
#2 You Were Born to Make a Difference in this World
A dear fan-turned-friend once wrote me a letter. In it, she said the following:
Thank you for all that you’ve done for me. It may seem insignificant to you but you’ve genuinely touched my life. Thank you for Ourea and all its lands, people and oddities, and thank you for Flick. There is not one thing I don’t love about the series.
My mouth dropped open. I didn’t know what to say. If she’d been with me at the moment, I would have hugged her.
To be perfectly honest, I write because I love it. I write to escape into alternate worlds where magic is real and a single person can change the balance of a world. I write to lose myself in legends and to meet monsters. I write to test my understanding of human nature and because, well, it’s fun.
But to hear that my words can touch lives… now that is stellar. To share my love of the craft with others is a meaningful way to celebrate the power of writing.
From a smile in the hallway at work to helping someone up when they fall, you truly make a difference. It doesn’t matter how small the gesture is — when you help others, you matter. Now that’s magic.
