S. M. Boyce’s Origin Story | How a pickle jumpstarted S. M. Boyce’s writing career

I’ve noticed a trend lately: an author’s origin story can be fun, epic, or completely weird. It’s usually just one of those three. Now, I wish I could tell you that S. M. Boyce’s Origin Story is an epic tale, but mine is that last one. Yeah, the weird one. So prepare yourself for…

S. M. Boyce’s Origin Story

*Bum bum bum*

In elementary school, we had a writing contest. The lot of us had to write a short children’s book, complete with illustrations. Maybe I was hungry at the time, or maybe I was a morbid little beast, but I wrote about a lonely pickle. She was the last in her jar and aching for companionship. For the life of me, I can’t remember how it ended… and considering where her friends likely went (*urp*) I think it’s probably a good thing I’ve forgotten the finale. Like I said, morbid little beast.

Since I can’t recall the ending, I hope you enjoy this imaginative retelling of the pickle story… and what it means to writers of the modern era. My buddy and I had fun with it, and decided to create the images from a child’s perspective. If nothing else, I hope my origin story at least makes you giggle. I hope the rest of your day is wonderful!
