Why We Love the Paranormal: Guest Post from Allison Foster

In a world where we can control any aspect of our lives, the paranormal removes that sense of control and can send us in a spiral as we try to explain why something is the way it is. Although we may have our own beliefs about the paranormal, it is a subject that is difficult to prove or disprove.

We are curious by nature and when a paranormal occurrence happens, many of us will want to know how and why. It’s the mystery of the unexplained that drives us to continue seeking answers to our questions. A circumstance could happen that we can’t wrap our minds around because it is so far out of the norm that we can’t comprehend its existence.

Why We Love the Paranormal

1. The Mystery – It is in our nature to discover truths regardless of circumstance. Many are driven to delve into the paranormal for the sheer excitement of trying to prove or disprove the subject matter.

Take ghosts, for example. Millions of people discredit their existence because they haven’t experienced it for themselves. Despite evidence to the contrary, many refuse to believe in an intangible being roaming the Earth. However, there are those who still dabble in this aspect in order to solve the mystery.

2. Imaginative – As many instances of paranormal activity can’t be disproved, it allows the imagination to work overtime. Anything that is beyond the scope of “normal” can hold an attraction to millions as it is a puzzle that hasn’t been solved. Our imaginations can fill in the blanks which usually makes for great literature and movies.

Do you think undead zombies could rise from the ground and move about eating people? Aside from the physical attributes that make zombies impossible due to bio-mechanics, people will still be enthralled by the notion that they could exist.

3. Eye of the Beholder – Who is to say that things like ghosts and zombies are paranormal? Hundreds of years ago, could Old Faithful be described as paranormal? In today’s world, we have evidence to support why the geyser erupts when it does. Does that make it any less paranormal?

The aurora borealis could have once been viewed as paranormal. Now that we understand that it is the reaction of the Earth’s magnetic shield protecting us from the solar radiation from the Sun, we can downgrade the instance to a normal occurrence. If this is true, then why are ghosts still classified as paranormal although we have evidence to the contrary? Is it because they are intangible and easily faked?

4. Fear – Millions of people enjoy the rush of adrenalin brought by an amount of fear. To them, nothing is more fearful than that which cannot be explained. It’s the driving force of most horror movies. For some odd reason, many of us enjoy a good scary movie for nothing more than the sheer adrenalin of it.

Oddly enough, the enjoyment of fear usually only works in a controlled space. That same instance happening in front of the individual would probably make him or her cry. In the security of our own homes, we talk a big game about outwitting the boogey-man. Would that same levelheadedness be a contributing factor if Michael Meyers was really chasing you with a machete?

Studies of the paranormal aren’t merely completed by melancholy teenagers dressed in black wearing dark lipstick and pale makeup. Many brilliant scientists believe in studies of the supernatural as they seek to discover answers to specific situations. Just because one person doesn’t believe that something outside of his or her norm exists, doesn’t mean it can’t exist on this planet.
